What To Expect
Your day trip to Ston starts at Dubrovnik Harbour in Gruž port at 10am.
Our first stop is one of the Elaphiti islands located just 5 kilometres (or 3 miles) from the Dubrovnik. With only 160 inhabitants, Kolocep is a car-free island that will immediately set a different vibe – the relaxed one.
Put on your swimsuit as we approach the southwestern end of the island where the Blue Cave is located. To fully experience this mesmerizing cave with azure water you’ll have to swim into the cave. Put your camera in a waterproof case and make some lasting photo memories. Note: Do not mix this cave with another cave with the same name on the island of Bisevo.
After some swimming and snorkelling, it’s time for history lessons. We set sail again and pass by many islands and islets that belong to the Elafiti Islands before stopping at Ston.
Ston is located on the peninsula of Pelješac and is known for three things: City Walls, Salt pans and oysters.
A lot of visitors are unaware of the fact that the second largest walls in the world are located near Dubrovnik, in the Old Town of Ston. Second only to the Great Wall of China, these walls were built in the 14th and 15th century to protect salt pans, when Dubrovnik bought Ston.
Get your tickets and walk on top of the walls, where you’ll see three fortresses, ten circular, thirty-one square towers and six semi-circular bastions. Get your camera ready as this place offers fantastic views.
It’s time to explore the oldest salt pans in Europe, dating back to the Roman times, two thousand years B.C. Ston was economically the most important place in the Dubrovnik Republic so to protect the income brought by salt pans, walls were erected. Visit the SOLANA STON “open-air” museum to find our more about salt-based history of the town.
Somebody mentioned oysters? They ‘re bred and harvested in a nearby place called Mali Ston and are a local delicacy served in many restaurants.
Stop for a lunch and ask for famous Ston oysters and Burara- a local dish with mussels, clams, and shrimps cooked in white wine and water.
Tired but happy after a day trip full of new experiences, we head back to Dubrovnik in one of our speedboats. Take your seat and grab a drink while enjoying the views of many Elaphiti islands we are passing by.
